About this resource

Description

Putting words in alphabetical order is one of the first research skills a young reader ever uses, and it begins with a simple question: which word comes first? By second grade, students are expected to look past the first letter and compare the second letter too, so that bells lands ahead of bow and candy ahead of cocoa. This Christmas ABC Order Worksheet gives them a festive, low-pressure way to practice exactly that step. Holiday words are words children already recognize on sight, so every bit of their attention goes to the letters instead of to decoding.

The page opens with a word box holding ten holiday words. Students read the box, then write the words in ABC order on the ten numbered lines below it. Every word in the box is paired with another word that starts with the same letter, so a child cannot finish the page on first letters alone. Part B follows with five word pairs to circle, and again both words in each pair share a first letter. Print it, hand it out, and let students work independently or beside a partner; the answer key on the final page turns checking into a one-minute job.

What’s Included

  • One printable worksheet page with a ten-word holiday word box
  • Ten numbered writing lines sized for second-grade handwriting
  • Five circle-the-word pairs that all turn on the second letter
  • A complete answer key as the final page

This 2nd grade alphabetical order worksheet helps children in three ways. First, it moves them off first-letter sorting, which is the single step most students skip when they meet a glossary or an index. Second, the ten-word list is long enough to require a real strategy, so children start crossing off words and working in passes rather than guessing. Third, the circle-the-word pairs isolate the skill, letting a teacher see at a glance whether a child truly compares letter by letter or is simply going by memory.

Teachers can use this Christmas ABC Order Worksheet as a December morning warm-up, a literacy-center task, or an early-finisher page. Try cutting the word box into ten cards and having partners physically arrange them before anyone writes. At home, families can extend the activity by alphabetizing names on holiday cards, spices in the cabinet, or titles on a bookshelf. For a quick assessment, cover the word box and read the words aloud instead, which turns the same page into a listening-and-sorting task.
