Description
Elapsed time is the amount of time that passes between a start time and an end time, and third grade is where children stop simply reading a clock and start reasoning with one. This hour elapsed time worksheet keeps every drawn time, every interval and every answer exactly on the hour, so students can count in clean one-hour jumps while they learn to watch the short hand move from numeral to numeral. Whole hours come first for a reason: once a child can hold the hour steady in their head, half hours, quarter hours and single minutes are small extensions of the same idea rather than a brand new skill.
This 3rd grade elapsed time worksheet asks children to work the skill backward, which is the half most practice pages leave out. In the first section, each card shows the time an activity ended on a coded analog clock together with how long the activity lasted, and students count back and write the start time in the box. One of those items counts back through twelve, the step a child cannot take by simply subtracting the numerals on the dial. In the second section, two short stories print the times as digits and run from the morning into the afternoon, and students write how much time has passed on the line under each question. Use it as guided practice after a lesson on reading a clock face, as morning work, as a math-center task, or as a quick check before a unit test. Three reasons this resource helps children learn elapsed time. First, every clock is drawn to the real specification, with the hour hand sitting squarely on its numeral at the hour and the minute hand on twelve, so students read a true clock face rather than a simplified drawing. Second, asking for the start time rather than the end time forces a child to see that the start, the interval and the end are three parts of one relationship, so no single memorized procedure will carry them through the page. Third, the word problems run across noon, something a twelve-hour dial cannot show, so children have to think about morning and afternoon instead of only about the numbers.
Once the hour elapsed time worksheet is finished, teachers and parents can stretch the practice in easy ways. Hang a demonstration clock where children can move the hands, name an ending time, and ask them to walk the hour hand backward while counting aloud. Turn the daily schedule into a problem set by asking what time a lesson must have started if it ran for two hours.
