How to teach Capitalization
Using L.2.2 Second Grade Common Core Lesson, students demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
This lesson teaches students how to know which words to capitalize and which words don’t need to be capitalized. This lesson is perfect for small group, literacy centers or independent practice.
Cut and sort the topic cards into Do Capitalize and Don’t Capitalize categories. Then, students will continue their practice of capitalization using the activity sheet.

Introduce this lesson by saying examples of common and proper nouns. If it a proper noun, tell students to clap or stomp. If it is a common noun, tell students to do nothing! Next, help your students come up with a rule about using capital letters. Then, students complete activity independently or with a partner. Finally, students continue their practice using the provided worksheets. Once students finish, ask students to add to their list of words that have capital letters.
