Reading comprehension means holding on to a story while you read it and then using what the text actually says to answer a question about it. Third graders are reading longer stories on their own, so they need practice with a text that has a real beginning, middle and end. The Learning to Ski Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them that: an original story about a girl on her very first ski lesson, who falls on her first run and makes it all the way down on her second. Because the story carries a clear sequence, a cause, a change of feeling and a main idea, one short page lets students practise four different comprehension moves.
This 3rd grade reading comprehension worksheet is a three-page printable. Page one holds the illustrated story, page two holds the questions, and page three is the complete answer key. Have students read the whole passage once without stopping, then read it again with the question page beside them so they can hunt for the evidence. The four multiple-choice items use fill-in-the-bubble circles, the fifth item asks students to pull a vocabulary word straight out of the text, and the last item asks for a written answer in their own words.
