About this resource

Description

Handwriting begins one letter at a time, and this Letter U Handwriting Practice Worksheet gives Kindergarten students a clear, calm place to learn how the letter U is formed. Children first meet the capital U, a single smooth curve that starts at the top line, dips down to the baseline, and rises back up again. Then they meet the lowercase u, which travels the same path in the smaller space between the dashed midline and the baseline. Tracing both letters on a three-line guide shows children exactly where each stroke starts and where it stops, so letter formation becomes automatic instead of something they have to puzzle out every single time they write.

This kindergarten alphabet worksheet is arranged in three short parts so young writers never feel rushed. In Part A, children trace a dotted capital U and then write their own U beside it, eight times across two roomy rows. Part B repeats the same routine for the lowercase u. In Part C, two picture cards — an umbrella and a unicorn — give the letter a sound and a meaning: children name the picture, hear the U at the beginning, and trace the whole word on its own three-line guide. Print it for morning work, a handwriting center, small-group instruction, or take-home practice.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 8 capital U and 8 lowercase u three-line tracing and writing cells
  • 2 picture-and-word tracing cards (umbrella, unicorn)

Three things make this Letter U Handwriting Practice Worksheet effective. First, every letter sits on a real three-line guide with a dashed midline, so children can see how tall the capital U is compared with the lowercase u instead of guessing. Second, tracing always comes before writing: the dotted model builds the motor path, and the open space beside it asks the child to reproduce that path from memory. Third, the picture cards connect the shape of the letter to the sound it makes, so handwriting practice doubles as beginning-sound practice and the letter is much easier to recall later.

Teachers and parents can stretch this skill well beyond the page. Have children write a giant U in the air with a whole arm before they pick up a pencil, or trace one in a tray of sand, salt, or shaving cream. Go on a letter U hunt around the classroom and around the house, listing every umbrella, uniform, and cup that hides the sound. Build the letter out of two pipe cleaners or a bent strip of paper. Finish by asking your child to write a short list of U words, or dictate a silly sentence about a unicorn under an umbrella for them to copy.
