Description
The long /a/ sound is easy to hear and surprisingly hard to spell, and that gap is exactly what this long a worksheet is built to close. A second grader who can already say cake, rain and play still has to decide which of three spellings the word actually uses, because all three make the same sound. Sorting words by their spelling pattern is what turns a sound a child recognises into a word a child can write.
This long a worksheet puts twelve long a words in a box and asks the student to file each one under the pattern that spells it: a_e (the silent e that reaches back over a consonant), ai (the vowel team in the middle of a word) and ay (the same team at the end). Every word belongs in exactly one column, so the task rewards looking closely rather than guessing. A clay picture sits under each column heading to anchor the pattern to a real word on the page: a cake for a_e, a train for ai, a tray for ay. Part B then asks for the sound in use, with three sentences to finish using words from the same box. An answer key is included on the final page.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It separates one sound into three spellings. Children who only hear the sound guess when they write; sorting makes the choice visible and teachable.
- It teaches where a pattern lives in a word. The ai and ay columns sit side by side, so a student discovers that position, not sound, decides between them.
