Description
Learning to hear and spell long vowel sounds is one of the biggest steps a first grader takes as a reader. A long vowel simply says its own name, so the a in cake, the i in kite, the o in bone and the u in flute all sound exactly like the letter itself. This Long Vowel Words Worksheet gives students steady, focused practice with that idea, first by naming pictures and spelling the words that go with them, and then by choosing the long vowel word out of a pair of look-alike words. Because every item on this long vowel words worksheet contrasts a long vowel spelling with a short vowel spelling, students learn to listen carefully instead of guessing from the shape of the word.
The activity is designed to be used with almost no preparation. Print the page, hand it out, and read the directions aloud once. In Part A, students look at four pictures, find the matching word in the Word Bank, and copy it onto the writing line inside each card, which gives them handwriting practice alongside the phonics.
