How to teach Long Division
In this 5.NBT.6 Common Core Activity, students find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends
and two-digit divisors.
This lesson teaches students how to divide four-digit dividends by two-digit divisors. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
The object of the game is to collect one of each five colored territory cards by traveling around the game board and solving division problems. First, roll the die and move that many spaces. If you land on a territory color that you need to gain, you may attempt to answer a problem card. Next, you must correctly divide the two numbers on the territory card. Then, cover the territory on your board if you answer the question correctly. The first player to divide and conquer all five territories is the winner! Finally, continue your practice with the provided worksheets independently or with a partner.

Use this Long Division Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.
First, introduce this lesson by reviewing long division skills introduced in fourth grade. Ask students to help you create a Don’t Forget Anchor Chart with helpful hints about dividing multi-digit numbers. Next, distribute materials to students. As students play Risk, circulate around the classroom and listen to discussions students have about dividing multi-digit numbers. After the activity, share students’ discussions that you heard to promote division skills. Finally, student can continue their practice using the provided worksheets individually or with a partner.
