About this resource
Description
Elapsed time is the amount of time that passes between a starting time and an ending time, and working it out to the exact minute is one of the harder jumps third graders make in measurement. Counting whole hours is easy; the trouble starts when the minutes in the end time are smaller than the minutes in the start time, so a student has to regroup an hour into sixty minutes before subtracting. This minute elapsed time worksheet gives children repeated, focused practice with exactly that move, and it does it with real clock times rather than tidy quarter hours.
The 3rd grade elapsed time worksheet opens with eight timed intervals. Each one shows a start time and an end time printed in digits, and the child writes the elapsed time on two lines, one for hours and one for minutes. Every interval crosses at least one whole hour, and three of them cross noon, which is the step children most often miss when they are used to reading a twelve-hour clock face. Two story problems follow. One asks for the elapsed time between two events, the other gives a starting time and a duration and asks for the finishing time, so students practise the skill in both directions instead of repeating one procedure eight more times. An answer key is included on the last page.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 8 start-to-end time intervals to the minute and 2 elapsed time story problems
This resource helps children in three ways. First, every interval regroups across the hour, so students build the one habit that makes elapsed time reliable instead of guessing from a number line. Second, the times are printed in digits, which keeps the thinking on the arithmetic rather than on interpreting a minute hand between two marks. Third, the story problems run forward and backward, so a child who has only learned to subtract two times has to stop and reason about what the question is actually asking.
Teachers and parents can stretch this minute elapsed time worksheet in a few easy ways. Ask students to sketch each interval on an open number line and jump to the next whole hour first, then to the end time, and compare that answer with the one they found by subtracting. Have children invent their own start and end times from a real school day, a bus schedule or a favourite show, then trade papers and check each other. For a quick warm-up, call out a start time and a duration and have the class write the finishing time on a whiteboard before you count to ten.
