Description
Multiplicative comparison is a big idea in 4th Grade math: one amount is a number of times as large as another. This multiplication comparison activity gives 4th and 5th Grade students a fun seaside way to read comparison word problems, write them as equations with a letter for the unknown number, and solve them. It also helps students tell the difference between “times as many” and “more than,” a key part of the standard.
Students cut out twelve word problem cards and twelve equation cards. They read a word problem about crabs, kites, sandcastles or sailboats, decide whether it compares by multiplying or by adding, and find the one equation card that matches it. Every card uses its own set of numbers, so each problem has exactly one match. Players record both card numbers, copy the equation, and solve for n on the recording sheet. This multiplicative comparison game works well in a math center, with a partner, or in a small group.
