Description

How to teach Multiplication

Using this Multiplying by Tens Activity, students multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90.

Being able to multiply by powers of 10 will support your students as they advance in their math career. This activity will help them as they multiply by Exponents and find patterns in place value.

Students will shuffle and sort cards into piles according to the color of the card. Then, students will then flip over the card and using base 10 blocks for support multiply the two numbers together and record on the recording sheet. Finally, students explain how they solved.

Use this Prime Factorization Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.

Introduce by showing students 3 x 4 = 12 and 3 x 40= 120. Next, students share what they notice about the two equations. Challenge students to figure out the product of 30 x 4. Then, students complete the activity individually or with a partner. Finally, students create their own multiplication equations showing multiplying by 10s. Once finished, challenge your students to write explanations of how they can figure out the pattern. This activity is a great addition to your math centers or early finishers activities. It is an easy activity for you to even send home for additional practice.
