Description
Shape poetry is where fourth graders discover that a poem’s form carries meaning. This my shape poem worksheet starts with a short original poem whose lines widen toward the middle and narrow again, so the block of type is itself the outline of the object the poet is describing. The object is never named. Students have to gather the evidence the poet left behind — paper, wind, a string being reeled in — and figure out what they are looking at, which is exactly the work of analysing how a poem’s structure shapes its meaning.
Part A holds the model poem and an illustration of the tall tree it mentions. Part B asks three fill-in-the-bubble questions: name the object, name the comparison the poet makes, and identify which line forms the widest part of the shape. Part C turns the page over to the student — choose an object you know well, write it on the first line, then gather the words and phrases you would use to describe it. Those notes become the raw material for a shape poem of the student’s own, which is the real assignment this page is preparing. An answer key is included for Part B, and the key notes that Part C answers will vary, so the my shape poem worksheet can be checked in a moment.

- Read the model poem aloud twice before anyone answers, once for sense and once for shape.
- Cover the poem and ask students to describe its outline from memory.
- Have students lightly sketch their object on a second sheet, then write their poem along the outline.
- Display the finished poems without titles and let the class guess each subject.
