Description
A cinquain is a short five-line poem that paints a whole picture with only a handful of carefully chosen words, and counting those words is what makes the form so friendly for young writers. This Cinquain Worksheet – Pattern 1 introduces the simplest cinquain pattern of all: line one holds a single word, and every line after it adds exactly one more, so the poem grows into a neat little staircase of language. Because the rule is arithmetic rather than rhyme, second graders can hear the shape of a poem long before they have to worry about syllables, stanzas, or meter.
This 2nd grade poetry worksheet works in two halves. In Part A the five lines of a model cinquain about a kite have been shuffled out of order, and students count the words in each line to work out where it belongs, writing the line number inside the box beside it. That one act of counting teaches the pattern far better than a printed rule ever could. In Part B students pick a topic they enjoy and write a cinquain of their own on five numbered writing lines, using the pattern they have just uncovered for themselves. A complete answer key is included on the second page.

Three things make this Cinquain Worksheet – Pattern 1 worth a spot in your poetry unit. First, it turns an abstract poetic form into something a child can check by counting, so being right does not depend on a teacher confirming it. Second, putting the shuffled lines back in order is close reading in miniature: a student has to look at every single word before deciding where a line belongs. Third, the writing half asks for original language while keeping the scaffolding tight, so even a reluctant writer finishes a real poem in a few minutes and has something to be proud of.
Read the model poem aloud together before anyone picks up a pencil, clapping once for each word so the growing pattern can be heard as well as seen. A quick brainstorm helps too: list describing words and action words about the chosen topic on scrap paper first, then let students pull from that list as they build lines two and three. Finished cinquains look wonderful copied onto colored paper and displayed as a class poetry wall, and the same pattern can be reused all year with seasonal topics, from apples in the fall to seeds in the spring.
