About this resource
Description
The Oscar the Octopus reading comprehension worksheet helps second graders read a short animal text closely and answer questions using details from it. Children learn that an octopus is a soft sea animal with no bones, eight long arms and rows of round suckers, and they discover where Oscar hides, what he eats and how he stays safe on the sea floor.
Students begin by reading the four short paragraphs about Oscar, with a bright illustration of his rocky den on the sea floor and the pile of empty shells he leaves outside it. Next, they answer four multiple-choice questions by filling in the bubble next to the best answer. Finally, they write a short response that names two ways Oscar uses his strong arms, using details from the text. Use it for small-group reading, a science center, independent practice or homework.
What’s Included
- A one-page informational text about Oscar the octopus with a full-color picture
- Four multiple-choice comprehension questions
- One short written response question
- A complete answer key
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
First, it builds reading comprehension by sending students back to the text to find each answer. Second, it teaches real science facts about how an ocean animal’s body helps it grab food, hide and escape. Third, the written response gives kids practice using text details to explain their thinking.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Read the text together first, then let children answer on their own. After the Oscar the Octopus reading comprehension worksheet, have kids count to eight on a paper octopus, press a suction cup onto a window to feel how a sucker holds on, or compare an octopus with a fish. It also pairs nicely with any 2nd grade reading comprehension worksheet or science lesson about ocean animals. You could even ask students to draw Oscar hiding in his den and label his arms and suckers.
