The OW OU Sorting Worksheet gives first graders focused practice with the two vowel teams that spell the same /ow/ sound. Words like brown, crown, and town use ow, while cloud, mouth, and sound use ou, and a young reader cannot hear the difference — they have to look for it. Sorting words by the letters that spell the sound is how children build the visual memory that later turns into confident spelling. This ow ou sorting worksheet keeps that single job in front of the student from the first word to the last.
Students read the twelve words in the word box, decide which vowel team each one carries, and copy the word onto a solid handwriting rule under the matching ow or ou header. Three things make this sheet work for first graders. First, writing each word out — instead of drawing a line to it — puts the spelling pattern through the hand as well as the eye, which is where it sticks. Second, both columns are exactly the same size with the same number of lines, so the page never hints at where a word belongs; the student has to read it. Third, the word set is built only from one-syllable words a first grader can already decode, so the whole task is about the vowel team and nothing else.
