Description
Counting pennies is where money math begins for most first graders. A penny is worth one cent, so finding the value of a group of pennies is simply counting by ones, a skill children already know. This Pennies Matching Worksheet connects that familiar counting to real coins: look at a group of pennies, count each one, and name the amount in cents. Because every coin on the page is the same, children can build confidence with the idea of cents before they meet nickels, dimes, and quarters.
The sheet moves through three short activities that build on each other. First, students count four groups of pennies and draw a line from each group to its matching amount. Next, they count two rows of pennies and write each total on a line. Finally, they read a short word problem about a piggy bank and work out how much money is left after buying a sticker. Use it as morning work, a math center, or homework; this 1st grade money worksheet takes about ten minutes and needs nothing beyond a printer. Here are three reasons this worksheet helps young learners. It keeps one coin on the page, so children can focus on counting and on writing amounts with the cent sign. It asks for the same idea in three ways: matching an amount, writing an amount from scratch, and using an amount in a story, which moves the skill from recognition to real understanding. Try a few hands-on follow-ups at home or in the classroom. Give each child a small cup of real pennies and have them count the coins aloud as they slide them across the table. Set up a pretend store with items priced from 1 to 10 cents and let students pay with pennies only. Drop pennies into a jar one at a time while your child counts along, then ask how many cents are inside. Singing a counting-by-ones song while stacking pennies turns practice into play.
