About this resource
Description
The Phobias: Are You Scared of Anything? Reading Comprehension Worksheet takes a big feeling and turns it into careful reading practice. Almost every child is scared of something, and this original passage explains, in plain 3rd grade language, what happens when an ordinary fear grows into a phobia. Reading comprehension at this grade asks a student to do two jobs at once: follow a real story, and reach back into the text for the exact words that prove an answer. Quinn is afraid of high places and sits out while her friends climb, until her classmate Skylar offers her a plan of one rung a day. The topic is warm and encouraging, never frightening.
Print the sheet and read the passage aloud together, or let students read it on their own first. Page one holds the story and a full-colour illustration of the moment Skylar points up the ladder. Page two carries the Name and Date line, four multiple-choice questions and one written response that asks students to gather details from more than one paragraph. Model the first question out loud, showing students how to underline the sentence that proves the choice, then let them finish independently. The answer key on the last page names the evidence, so marking takes a minute.
What’s Included
- A one-page original passage written and measured for 3rd grade readers
- A clear in-text definition of the word phobia, so no dictionary is needed
- An original full-colour illustration of the story’s main moment
- Four multiple-choice questions, including one about why the author says a little fear is useful
- One written-response question with ruled writing space, and a complete answer key
This 3rd grade reading comprehension worksheet helps students in three ways. First, it builds the habit of reading for evidence, because every answer sits somewhere in the passage and can be pointed to. Second, it introduces an academic word the right way: phobia is defined in the sentence that first uses it, which is exactly the skill state tests call determining word meaning from context. Third, it gives a nervous reader a story that ends well, so a lesson about fear leaves the class feeling braver rather than worried.
Teachers and parents can stretch the sheet further. Ask students to write the next rung of Quinn’s plan, or to list three things that make almost anyone nervous and one small step that helps. Have partners take turns reading a paragraph aloud and asking each other one question about it. Use the passage to start a gentle class talk about asking a trusted grown-up for help. Keep a copy in a reading centre or a sub folder, and pair the Phobias: Are You Scared of Anything? Reading Comprehension Worksheet with its answer key so any adult can check the work.
