Description
Consonant blends are two letters that keep both of their sounds and slide together at the start of a word, and the pair pl and pr is one of the first sets a young reader meets. This pl, pr blends worksheet gives first graders focused practice hearing that opening sound and writing the two letters that spell it, so words like plant, plug, present and pretzel stop being guesses and start being read.
Six picture cards fill the top of this first grade blends worksheet. The child names each picture out loud, listens for the sound that starts it, and prints pl or pr on the line in front of the word ending the page already shows. Two sentences at the bottom then ask for a whole word, so the blend is practiced on its own first and inside real reading second. Work through the pictures together the first time, then let the page stand alone as independent practice, morning work, or a quick check after a phonics lesson.

Three things make this pl, pr blends worksheet work. First, it pairs a picture with a printed word ending, so a child has to say the word and hear the blend instead of copying a model. Second, pl and pr are minimal partners in which only the second letter changes, which trains the careful listening that keeps play and pray, or plant and print, apart. Third, every answer line on the page is exactly the same length, so nothing in the layout hints at which blend belongs where and the reading itself is what solves each item.
Away from the page, go on a blend hunt around the room and collect everything that starts with pl or pr: a plug, a plant, a plate, a printer, a prize. Say the words in pairs and stretch that opening sound. Build the two blends with letter tiles and swap the l for an r to watch one small change make a brand new word. Read a stack of picture books together and let your reader raise a hand every time a pl or pr word goes by, then write the collected words on a chart to keep near the reading corner.
