Description
Place value is the idea that a digit’s position decides its worth: the 4 in 46,821 is not four, it is forty thousand. Fourth graders who miss that one idea will misread every large number they meet for the rest of the year, so it is worth slowing down on. This place value review worksheet walks through six-digit numbers one position at a time, asking students to find the ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands and hundred thousands place in numbers drawn from across that whole range.
Part A gives nine numbers, each with a place value named beneath it, and asks students to circle the digit that sits in that position. Every digit is printed in an equal-width column, so a student cannot spot the answer by looking – they have to count the places, which is the point. Part B turns this multi-digit place value worksheet into thinking work: students write 342,706 in expanded form, then read a classmate’s claim about the value of a digit, explain the mistake, and write the correct value. That error-analysis item is the one that reveals whether a child truly understands position or has just been pattern-matching.
