Description
This Questions Worksheet helps 2nd graders learn how questions work. A good question starts with the right question word and ends with a question mark. Children who can pick between who, what, when, where and why are learning to ask for exactly the information they need, a skill that shows up in reading, writing and everyday conversation.
The page has two parts. In Part A, students read five questions that are each missing their first word. The answer to each question is printed right underneath it, so students use that answer as a clue and choose the one word from the word box that fits. In Part B, students write two questions of their own, one that starts with How and one that starts with Which, and finish each with a question mark. Use it as a mini-lesson, a morning warm-up, a literacy center or homework.

Why This Worksheet Helps
First, printing the answer under each question turns a guessing game into careful reading: a person means who, a place means where, a time means when, a reason means why and a thing means what. Second, every word in the box is used exactly once, so students can check their own work as they go. Third, Part B moves students from choosing a question word to writing a full question, which is where the capital letter and question mark really get practiced.
Teachers and parents can build on this questions worksheet all week. Play a quick game where you give an answer, such as “at the park,” and students race to say a matching question. Have partners interview each other using each question word once. During read-alouds, pause and ask students to make up a who, where or why question about the story. Post the question words on a chart so students can reach for them during writing time.
