Description
An r blend is two letters that keep both of their sounds and slide together into one: the b and the r in bread, the t and the r in train. That is what makes blends harder than they look. A child who has learned that each letter makes one sound expects br to be a new sound, the way sh is, and instead has to hold two sounds and run them together fast. This R Blends Worksheet gives that skill a page of its own, with the five blends named right in the heading so the child knows exactly what to listen for: br, fr, gr, pr and tr.
The page is a word box and six sentences. Every word in the box begins with one of the five blends, and every sentence is missing exactly one of them. A child reads the sentence, decides which word makes sense, finds it in the box and writes it on the line. That is two skills working at once: the phonics skill of recognising the blend at the front of a printed word, and the reading skill of using the rest of the sentence to decide which word belongs. The words are not listed in the order the answers come, so the page cannot be finished by pairing the first word with the first blank. Each blank is the same length as every other, so the size of the space gives nothing away either. Use this 1st grade blends worksheet after a blends lesson, as morning work, or as a quick check that the five r blends have stuck.

This R Blends Worksheet helps children in three ways. First, the blends sit side by side rather than one per page, so a child has to tell br from br’s neighbours instead of applying the same answer six times in a row. Second, every word has to be read in context, which means the child cannot guess from the first letter alone — bread and brush both start with br, and only the sentence tells them apart. Third, the answers are written out in full, so the child practises spelling the blend as well as hearing it.
A few ways to extend the page. Ask students to underline the first two letters of each answer and say the two sounds separately, then run them together. Have them sort the six words by blend and notice that two of them share one. Say a new r blend word aloud — green, frost, print, brick — and ask which of the five blends it starts with. Then invite students to write one more sentence of their own using a word from the box.
