Description
Reading a thermometer is one of the first real measuring jobs a child is given, and it asks for more than recognising a number. The student has to find the top of the red line, work out what each small mark is worth, and count from the nearest labelled degree. This Thermometer Worksheet gives third graders four thermometers to read, two in degrees Celsius and two in degrees Fahrenheit, so the unit at the top of the tube becomes part of the answer instead of an afterthought.
Page one holds the whole activity. Each of the four thermometers is drawn to scale with a mark every two degrees and a printed label every ten, and every reading lands between two labels, so the child must count the marks rather than copy a number off the page. Two temperature change problems follow, one in Fahrenheit and one in Celsius, each with a rise and a fall to work through in order. The last item shows a wrong answer and asks the student to explain the mistake and give the correct reading, which is where counting by twos gets said out loud. The answer key is page two. To use this thermometer worksheet, read the first thermometer together, count the marks aloud between two labels, and then let students finish on their own.

Three things make this activity worth the class time. First, mixing the two units in one set stops students from reading every scale the same way. Second, every reading sits between labels, so the skill being practised is counting the divisions, not recognising a printed number. Third, the final item asks for an explanation, which turns a careless reading into something the class can talk about and correct together.
Teachers and parents can stretch this 3rd grade temperature worksheet in simple ways. Put a real thermometer outside in the morning and read it again at lunch, then write the change on the board. Ask students to point to the labelled degree nearest each reading before they count. Keep a weekly temperature chart by the window and compare the warmest and coolest days. Talk about where Celsius and Fahrenheit are each used, and let students say which numbers feel like a hot day in both units.
