Description
Finding the main topic of an informational text is one of the biggest reading jobs in second grade, and this seeds main details worksheet teaches it with a short non-fiction passage about how a seed becomes a plant. Students read three paragraphs, answer questions about the details, and then name the most important idea of the whole text in their own words. Because the topic is a familiar one, the reading work stays on the skill instead of on the science.
The passage is written and measured at a second grade reading level, and it follows a seed from its hard outer coat through germination to the day the grown plant makes new seeds of its own. A full-colour watercolour illustration of a garden bed sits above the text. Page two holds four multiple choice questions and one written response, and page three is the complete answer key. Print it, read the passage together or independently, and let students work through the questions.

Use this seeds reading comprehension worksheet as a guided reading passage, an independent centre, a homework page, or a quick check before a unit on plants. Read the first paragraph aloud and ask what it is mostly about, then let students finish the page on their own. Ask students to underline the sentence that answers each question before they fill in a bubble; that one habit turns guessing into evidence. Pair the page with a real planting activity: put bean seeds in a clear cup with a damp paper towel, watch the coat split open, and have students point to the sentence in the passage that describes what they see. For an extension, ask students to write one more detail they learned and explain how it supports the main topic.
