Description
Sequencing is the skill of putting events in the order they happen, and it is one of the first steps toward understanding how a story works. This sequencing pictures worksheet gives kindergarten students a simple, familiar task to practice with: making a cheese sandwich. Children look at four pictures, decide what happens first, next, then, and last, and use order words to retell the steps.
The sheet is titled Sandwich Sequence. In Part A, students study four colorful pictures that are printed out of order and write 1, 2, 3, or 4 in the box under each picture. In Part B, they read four short sentences that retell the sandwich steps and write the missing word from a word box. Use it after a read-aloud about the beginning, middle, and end of a story, or as a quick independent literacy center.

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, it builds the idea that events happen in a set order, which is the base of retelling a story and understanding plot. Second, the order words first, next, then, and last give children the language they need to explain a sequence out loud and in writing. Third, pairing pictures with short sentences lets early readers use what they see to help them read the words, which builds confidence.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Before students start, make a real sandwich together or act out the steps, and ask children to say what comes next. After the worksheet, have students cut apart a copy of the pictures and put them in order again, or draw and number their own steps for washing hands or getting dressed.
