How to Teach Alphabetical Order
This shapes alphabetical order worksheet helps 3rd grade students build strong dictionary skills with words they already know from math class. Putting words in ABC order means looking at the first letter, and when the first letters match, moving on to the second, third, or even fourth letter until the words are different. Shape names like hexagon, heptagon, triangle, and trapezoid are perfect for this practice because so many of them begin with the same letters.
Students read three sets of four shape words. Each set shares a first letter, and each set gets a little harder: in Set 1 the words differ at the second letter, in Set 2 at the third letter, and in Set 3 at the fourth letter. Students write each set in order on the numbered lines, then explain in their own words how they decided the order of Set 3.
