A short story is one of the best ways for a second grader to practise reading for detail. Young readers have to keep track of a character, a place and a few key events, then look back into the text to show what they remember. This Shelly’s Garden Surprise Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them an original garden story about a girl who picks carrots with her grandma and finds out who has been nibbling the missing ones.
Page one holds the passage and a colored-pencil garden scene of a little brown rabbit munching a carrot between the rows. The text is 177 words, written on grade level, and it moves through three parts: how Shelly and her grandma care for the garden, the day Shelly pulls the carrots and spots empty holes, and the surprise hiding behind the lettuce. It also slips in a simple plant fact, that a carrot is a root that grows down under the soil, so the story doubles as a small science read. Page two carries the questions. Four fill-in-the-bubble items pull details from every paragraph, and a written response asks why Shelly was surprised, using two things from the text. The answer key is the last page.
