Description
This short vowel sounds o worksheet helps 1st grade readers hear and use the short o sound, the sound you hear in the middle of words like dog, hot, and clock. Learning to pick out short vowel sounds is one of the most important steps in phonics, because it lets children blend and read simple words on their own.
In Part A, students say the name of each of six pictures and circle the ones that have short o. Some of the pictures, like the rope and the bone, have a long o sound on purpose, so children must listen carefully instead of guessing from the letter. In Part B, students read three short sentences and write the short o word from the word box that finishes each one. One extra word in the box makes them think about meaning as well as sound.
