About this resource
Description
Real comics tell a story with two kinds of words: the words characters say and the words that tell what happens. This speech bubbles and boxes comic strip worksheet gives second graders practice with both, so they learn to plan a story in order, describe each event, and add the dialogue their characters speak.
About This Worksheet
The page starts with a line to write the name of the comic. Below it are four numbered panels in two rows. Each panel has an empty speech bubble near the top, open space to draw, and a narration box along the bottom. The narration boxes begin with the sequence words First, Next, Then, and Last, so children tell what happens in each part of the story on the line, then write what the characters say in the bubbles. Because every story is the child’s own, the sheet is a single open-ended page. This 2nd grade comic strip template works well in a writing center, as morning work, or as a follow-up to a read aloud.
What’s Included
- A line to write the title of the comic
- Four numbered comic panels with room to draw
- A speech bubble in each panel for dialogue
- A narration box in each panel that starts with First, Next, Then, or Last
Why Kids Love It
First, the sequence words give children a clear beginning, middle, and end, so they practice telling events in order. Second, drawing before writing helps kids plan their ideas and gives them a picture to talk about. Third, having both a narration box and a speech bubble shows students the difference between telling what happens and showing what a character says.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Model a quick comic on the board before handing out the speech bubbles and boxes comic strip worksheet, and point out how the narration box and the bubble do different jobs. Invite students to read their finished comics to a partner using character voices. Offer a story starter, such as a lost mitten or a surprise visitor, for writers who need help getting going. Children who enjoy it can try a longer comic page next.
