Description
Capital letters, end marks and correct spelling are the conventions a reader notices first, and this Spelling and Conventions Worksheet asks second graders to fix all three in one short, focused page. A sentence that starts in lower case, runs past its stopping point with no period, and misspells a common word forces the reader to work out what the writer meant. Learning to catch those three things in someone else’s sentence is what makes a child start catching them in their own.
Part A prints three sentences entirely in lower case with no end mark, and the student writes each one out again with every capital in place and the right period or question mark at the end. Part B gives three commonly misspelled words to write correctly on the line. Used as a 2nd grade capitalization worksheet, it works well as morning work, as an editing warm-up before a writing block, or as a quick check after a lesson on proper nouns. The answer key on page two shows every rewritten sentence in full.

Three things make this spelling and conventions worksheet worth the time it takes. First, writing the whole sentence out again is harder and far more useful than circling an error, because the student has to hold every rule in mind at once instead of hunting for a single mistake. Second, the sentences carry the capitals that second graders actually miss: a name, a day of the week, a month, a state, and the word I standing alone. Third, the spelling words are the ones that turn up in real writing, so the practice transfers straight to a journal entry.
Away from the page, try reading a sentence aloud in a flat voice and asking your child whether it ends in a period or a question mark, then have them say why. Hunt for proper nouns on a cereal box, a street sign or a birthday card and talk about why each one is capitalized. Keep a small editing notebook where your child rewrites one sentence from a favorite book with every capital deliberately removed, then puts them back. Three minutes of that beats a page of drills.
