Reading comprehension is the skill of understanding, remembering, and thinking about a text after the last sentence is read — and third graders build it fastest with short, high-interest stories they actually want to finish. This Staying Cool Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them exactly that: an original summer story about three friends who set out to find three ways to beat the heat on the hottest day of the year. Students read the story once for enjoyment, then go back into it to find the main idea, put events in order, use context to choose the right word, and explain their thinking with evidence from the text.
This 3rd grade reading comprehension worksheet is organized into three parts so the work builds from easier recall toward real analysis. Part A asks three fill-in-the-bubble questions covering main idea, sequence, and inference. Part B is a four-word word bank that sends students back into the passage hunting for specific details. Part C is a written response that asks students to make a choice and support it with one detail from the story. Three things make this Staying Cool Reading Comprehension Worksheet effective in a third-grade classroom. First, the passage is written and measured to a third-grade reading level, so students can decode it on their own and spend their energy thinking instead of sounding out words. Second, the questions move through several comprehension skills in one short session — main idea, sequence, inference, vocabulary in context, and text evidence — which is the same mix state reading assessments use.
