Description
This thanksgiving fact families worksheet gives first grade students a friendly, holiday-themed way to practice addition and subtraction fact families within 20. A fact family is a group of three numbers that make two addition facts and two subtraction facts, and seeing all four together is what turns separate answers into one connected idea. Once a child knows that 4 and 8 make 12, the facts 12 minus 4 and 12 minus 8 stop being new problems to solve.
Each of the three cards on the page shows a fact-family triangle with one number missing. Students find the missing number first, then use all three numbers to complete the four facts printed underneath. Because the unknown moves around the triangle from card to card, children cannot fall into a single habit of always adding or always subtracting. They have to look at what is given and decide.
