About this resource

Description

Final consonant blends are one of the last decoding hurdles first graders clear before they read independently, and the letters l and d at the end of a word are a perfect place to practice. In words like told, gold, held and field, both sounds have to be heard and said together, quickly, without a vowel slipping in between them. This LD Phonics Stories Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives children a short, gentle story packed with -ld words so they meet the pattern in real reading rather than on a drill sheet, and then asks them to show they understood what they read.

Donald and Gerald are old pals who walk out to a big field of gold marigolds, fill a wide pail, and sell the flowers at a stand. The story runs to ninety-three words at a first grade reading level and carries more than twenty -ld words, so a child sounding out the pattern gets plenty of practice in one sitting. Read the story aloud together first, then let the child read it alone and answer the five multiple-choice questions on page two. Because it doubles as a first grade ending blends worksheet, it works just as well in a small phonics group as it does for at-home reading practice.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 1 original 93-word -ld phonics story with a full-colour illustration
  • 5 multiple-choice comprehension questions with three choices each

Three things make this resource work. First, the -ld pattern is taught in context: every question sends the child back into the story to find the evidence, so decoding and understanding are practised together instead of separately. Second, the reading level is measured, not guessed, so the sentences stay short and the vocabulary stays inside what a first grader can actually read alone. Third, the answer key turns this LD Phonics Stories Reading Comprehension Worksheet into a quick check you can grade in under a minute, which makes it easy to see whether a child needs more time with final blends before moving on.

Try a few extra activities once the page is finished. Ask your child to hunt back through the story and circle every word ending in -ld, then read the list aloud in one breath. Build a word ladder on a whiteboard by changing one letter at a time: cold, bold, gold, told, hold. Play a quick sorting game with word cards, putting -ld words in one pile and words ending in other blends in another. Or take the story outside and let your child retell it in their own words while you pick flowers together, which turns a reading lesson into a memory.
