Description
Six is the fact family where counting backwards on fingers finally runs out of room, so it is exactly where a child has to start reasoning instead. This subtract six matching worksheet gives first graders that practice across the whole range to twenty, so 18 − 6 gets the same confident answer as 7 − 6. Students who know how to take six apart — four to get down to the ten, two more after — carry that strategy straight into every larger subtraction they meet.
The page has two parts. Part A sets six subtraction problems in blue pills down the left side and their six answers down the right, in a scrambled order, with a connect rail between them — the child solves each problem and draws a line to the matching difference. Because the answers are shuffled, nobody can pair them off by position; every line has to be earned by doing the math. Part B then asks for four more answers written into boxes, which moves the student from recognizing an answer to producing one. An answer key is included on the second page.

How This Helps Kids Learn
First, it builds fact fluency without drill fatigue. Drawing a line is a small, satisfying action, so a child works through six facts without feeling like they have done six problems. Second, the scrambled answer column makes the student check their work: an answer that is already taken belongs to a different problem, so the set has to come out right as a whole. Third, the two parts ask for two different skills. Matching tests recognition, writing tests recall, and a child who can do both has really learned the fact.
