How to teach Opinion Writing
Using Writing About the Topic Activity, students write opinion pieces in which they state an opinion, reasons for the opinion, and closure.
Being able to clearly share your opinion with reasons to support your beliefs is important for your students. This activity will help guide students’ writing to create powerful and persuasive writing pieces.
Choose a Book Card or Topic Card. Then, you may choose to draw a picture, talk about it, or write about it to share your opinion.

Use this Topic Opinion and Supporting Evidence Mind Map Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce this activity by asking students This or That Questions. Examples could be “What is better- ice cream or Popsicle?” Next, choose one student from each side to explain why they chose their answer. Then, distribute the activity materials so students can begin their research. Finally, students can share their opinions through a gallery walk or other presentation.
