Description
Commas help readers know when to pause and how the parts of a sentence fit together. This writing with commas worksheet gives 4th grade students practice with two of the most important comma rules: using commas to separate three or more items in a list, and using a comma before a joining word such as but or so when two sentences become one compound sentence.
In the first section, students read five sentences and add every missing comma. Next, they study four sentences that already have commas and decide whether each comma splits up a list or joins two sentences. Finally, students write their own sentence that uses commas both ways. Model the first item together, then let students work on their own and check their answers with the key.
