This Elements of Poetry Worksheet helps students name the parts a poem is built from and use those words correctly. Third graders are asked to refer to stanzas, lines, rhyme, and repetition when they talk about a poem, and those terms are much easier to hold on to once a child has a real poem in front of them to point at. This elements of poetry worksheet prints an original poem right on the page, so every question has an answer a student can find, check, and explain without guessing.
The worksheet opens with a short poem called Rain Song, written in three stanzas of three lines each, with the same line repeated at the end of every stanza. Students read the poem and then answer five questions on the lines beside them: how many stanzas the poem has, how many lines are in each stanza, how many lines the whole poem has, which two words rhyme in the first stanza, and which line the poet repeats. A final written response asks them to explain why they think the poet repeated that line, using words from the poem. That last question is what turns this 3rd grade poetry worksheet from labeling into thinking. Print it, read the poem aloud once together, and let students work through the questions on their own. An answer key is included on the last page.

This resource helps kids learn the elements of poetry in three ways. First, it puts the poem and the questions on the same page, so a student is always reading evidence instead of recalling a definition. Second, it moves from counting to noticing to explaining, which is the order these skills actually develop in. Third, the repeated line gives the class one clear example of repetition to talk about, so the term stops being a vocabulary word and starts being something they can hear.
Teachers and parents can stretch this lesson in a few easy directions. Read Rain Song aloud and clap on the repeated line so students hear the beat. Ask students to write a fourth stanza that keeps the same repeated line and finds a new rhyme. Bring in a favorite picture book poem and count its stanzas and lines together the same way. You can also have students highlight the rhyming words in one color and the repeated line in another before they write their answers.
