Description
A picture is the easiest story starter a second grader will ever meet, and this you write the story artist picture worksheet hands them one and then gets out of the way. Narrative writing asks a child to invent a character, put that character somewhere, and make something happen in an order a reader can follow. Starting from a blank page makes all three decisions at once, which is where most young writers stall. Starting from a picture makes the first two decisions for them, so the whole of their attention goes into the part the standard actually tests: what happens next, and how it is told.
The picture on this you write the story artist picture worksheet shows a young artist standing on the grass beside a big painting of a sunflower he has just finished, and a small bird that has landed right beside it and is looking at the flower. Nothing in the picture explains itself. Did the bird think the sunflower was real? Was the boy painting it from a real flower? What does he do the moment the bird looks up? Under the picture are eight roomy writing lines at second grade handwriting size. Students look, name the artist, and tell the story, which is exactly what the narrative standard asks of them: a real or imagined experience with characters, a sequence of events, and an ending.

Ask students to circle the sentence in their own story that tells what happens last. For a partner activity, have two children swap pages and add one more sentence to each other’s ending. At home, talk the story through out loud before any writing starts, then let the child write the version they told you.
