A blank page is the hardest thing you can hand a young writer, and this you write the story fishing picture worksheet replaces it with something a second grader can actually talk about. The picture shows a child and a grown-up standing on the grassy bank of a lake at the moment a fish leaps out of the water, the child pointing and the grown-up turning to look. Nothing on the page says who they are, what they said, or what happens next, so every one of those choices belongs to the writer. That is exactly the work of a narrative: choosing characters, settling on a beginning, and deciding how the moment turns out.
This printable page gives the picture the top half of the sheet, large enough for a child to study details like the tackle box in the grass and the rod leaning against the post, and gives the rest of the page eight solid writing rules spaced for second-grade handwriting. The directions ask for a story about what the child sees, for the people to be named, and for what they do next, which quietly asks for characters, a setting, and a sequence of events without using any of those words. Because every story will be different, there is no single right response and nothing to mark against.
