From our teachers' playbook

Count by leaps, multiply like a pro

What do 3rd graders learn about skip counting?

In 3rd grade, skip counting becomes the doorway to multiplication. Kids move past 2s, 5s and 10s to count by 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s, and they start to see each list as a set of multiples. Counting 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 is really 5 × 4 = 20. They use skip counting to solve equal groups, arrays and early division too: "How many 3s make 18?" The click moment comes when a child stops counting from zero and just knows that the sixth jump of 7 lands on 42.

Our favorite ways to make skip counting stick

Skip counting is all about rhythm and patterns. These moves help 3rd graders turn those patterns into fast, confident multiplication facts.

Sing the tricky ones

Threes, sixes, sevens and eights are where kids stall, so we give them a tune. Play the Counting By Threes song twice, then pause it and let the class sing the next multiple on their own. Melody carries the number list long after the song ends.

Why it works: words set to a repeating melody are easier to recall than the same words spoken (Wallace, 1994).

Build equal groups first

Before any chanting, kids build groups with counters: four piles of 6, then count them by 6s. Then they draw the groups and write 6, 12, 18, 24 under each one. Seeing the jumps as real groups is what connects skip counting to multiplying.

Why it works: the U.S. Department of Education's guide for teaching elementary math recommends moving from hands-on objects to drawings to numbers.

One number a week, every day

Pick a "number of the week" and skip count it at morning meeting, in line and before recess. Monday it is 4s, next week 6s. A minute a day, all year long, builds the multiples kids need for multiplication and division.

Why it works: short practice spread over several days beats one long session, according to a large review of learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Skip counting questions for 3rd grade

What should 3rd graders be able to skip count by?

By the end of 3rd grade, most kids should skip count by every number from 2 to 10, at least up to the tenth multiple. Those lists are the multiplication facts they need to know by heart.

How does skip counting help with multiplication?

Each skip count is a running total of equal groups. Counting 3, 6, 9, 12 shows that 4 groups of 3 is 12, so kids can find any fact by counting jumps until they memorize it.

How can I practice skip counting at home?

Count stairs by 2s, coins by 5s and 10s, or toss a ball back and forth saying the next multiple. Counting songs in the car are a great way to practice the harder numbers too.

My child skip counts but still counts on fingers for facts. Is that OK?

Totally normal in 3rd grade. Keep practicing a few minutes a day, and encourage them to start from a fact they know, like 5 × 6 = 30, then add one more 6 to get 36.
