From our teachers' playbook

Little words that stand in for nouns

What do kids learn about pronouns?

A pronoun takes the place of a noun so we do not have to repeat it over and over. Instead of "Maya grabbed Maya's bag," we write Maya grabbed her bag. Younger kids start with personal pronouns like I, you, he, she, it, we and they. Then they learn which ones go in the subject spot (She ran) and which go after the verb (I saw her). Older students add possessive pronouns like mine and theirs, reflexive pronouns like himself, and relative pronouns like who and which. The big skill is making sure every pronoun clearly points back to one noun.

How we teach pronouns

Pronouns make more sense in real sentences. These moves get kids swapping, sorting and fixing.

Swap the noun

Write a short paragraph that repeats a name in every sentence and read it out loud in a silly voice. Kids quickly agree it sounds strange! Then cross out the repeated names together and swap in pronouns. Seeing why we need them makes them stick.

Why it works: handing over the work step by step, from teacher to student, is one of the most widely used teaching frameworks (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Subject or object sort

Make two columns, "does the action" and "gets the action", and sort pronoun cards like I, me, she, her, they and them. Then test each one in a sentence frame: "___ went to the park." It fixes "Me and him went" faster than any rule.

Why it works: kids understand an idea best when they touch it, then draw it, then write it, the order the U.S. Department of Education recommends for elementary math.

Who is it?

Read sentences with pronouns and ask kids to point to the noun each pronoun stands for. If two people could be "he", it is a great teaching moment about clear writing.

Why it works: researchers who compared ten study methods found practice testing is one of the two that work best (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Pronoun questions from teachers and parents

What is a pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun, such as he, she, it, we or they. Pronouns help writing sound smooth and less repetitive.

What are the types of pronouns kids learn?

Elementary students learn personal pronouns (I, you, he), possessive pronouns (mine, yours, theirs), reflexive pronouns (myself, herself) and, later, relative pronouns (who, which, that).

When do kids learn pronouns in school?

Kids begin using personal pronouns in kindergarten and 1st grade. Possessive and reflexive pronouns usually come in 2nd and 3rd grade, and relative pronouns in 4th grade.

Is it "me and him" or "he and I"?

Use he and I when they do the action: "He and I went home." Use me and him after the verb: "She invited him and me." A quick trick is to try each pronoun alone in the sentence.
