About this resource
Description
Every sentence needs the right end mark to tell the reader how to say it. In the Punctuation Pow Activity, 1st and 2nd grade students read telling, asking, and exciting sentences and decide whether each one needs a period, a question mark, or an exclamation point. Choosing the mark helps children hear the difference between a statement, a question, and a strong feeling.
How to Use This Activity
Players get four Sentence Cards each and race along a colorful game board. They spin the paper spinner, move, and read the end mark on their space. If a sentence in their hand needs that mark, they read it out loud and put it down. Landing on a POW space means taking a new card, and the first player with no cards left wins. This end punctuation board game is easy to set up for a literacy center, a small group, or partners.

Why This Activity Helps Kids
First, children read each sentence closely, which builds fluency and attention to meaning. Second, sorting sentences by their end marks makes the three sentence types easy to remember. Third, the game keeps every player reading and talking about punctuation on each turn.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use the Punctuation Pow Activity after a lesson on sentence types, or as a fun review before writing time. Ask children to read each sentence with the right voice: calm, curious, or excited. Later, have them write their own sentences with the correct end marks.
