How to teach Groups of Ten
In this 1.NBT.2 First Grade Common Core Lesson, students will practice finding groups of 10 to build their understanding of place value.
In this lesson, students build their foundation of groups of tens using animals. This practice helps them as they transition into tens and ones being shown with base ten blocks.
Put out all of the tens frames of animals and count each animal. Each time you say a group of 10 (10,20,30,40,etc), place the number card next to that animal set. After you finish matching, use your knowledge of groups of 10 to figure out how many tens and ones are shown using base ten blocks.

If you are using this lesson, your students are probably learning about Groups of 10.
Use this Counting Groups of 10 Activity as an additional resource for your students.
As an introduction to this lesson, have students practice counting by tens using the Have Fun Teaching Counting by Tens Song. Then, ask students show different ways that they could make the number 12 through drawing. Look for student drawings that follow the ten and some more idea. Together as a class, have students count the animals and place the number card next to the animal set. Finally, students will bring all of their learning together using the Counting Tens and Ones or Drawing Tens and Ones worksheets.
