About this resource
Description
Reading comprehension is the skill of pulling meaning out of a text and proving it with evidence, and this breakfast cereal reading comprehension worksheet gives third graders a short, friendly story to practice on. Students read about a girl named Naomi, a visit from the school nurse, and the label on the side of a cereal box. Along the way they meet a real academic word, label, defined right in the sentence that introduces it, which is exactly the kind of vocabulary work state assessments ask about.
The passage runs 244 words and measures on grade level for third grade, so it is long enough to build reading stamina without overwhelming a young reader. Page one holds the illustrated story. Page two holds the questions: four multiple choice items and one written response. The answer key is the last page, so grading takes seconds. Print the sheet, hand it out, and let students read independently, with a partner, or as a small group with you.
What’s Included
- A one page original story about choosing a breakfast cereal, written and measured for third grade
- A full color illustration of the scene at the top of the passage page
- Four multiple choice questions covering recall, vocabulary in context, cause and effect, and inference
- One written response item with three writing lines that asks for two details from the text
- A complete answer key with the evidence from the passage
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Every question can be answered from the text, so students learn to go back and look instead of guessing
- The vocabulary item teaches students to use the surrounding sentence to work out an unfamiliar word
- The written response asks for two details, which builds the habit of supporting an answer with evidence
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Use this breakfast cereal reading comprehension worksheet as a warm up, a reading center, a homework page, or a quick check before a unit test. Ask students to underline the sentence that proves each answer before they fill in a bubble. Read the story aloud once as a class, then let students reread it quietly on their own. Bring in a real cereal box and let students find the label, the sugar line, and the fiber line for themselves. Pair this 3rd grade reading comprehension worksheet with a writing prompt about the breakfast your students would pick and why.
