Description
Poems do not sound like ordinary sentences, and second graders notice that long before they can explain it. Standard RL.2.4 asks them to explain it anyway: to describe how words and phrases such as rhymes, repeated lines, and beats give a poem its rhythm and its meaning. This RL.2.4 Common Core Worksheet turns that standard into one short original poem and five questions a child can answer by pointing at the page. Students read a twelve-line rain-and-pond poem, hunt for the words that rhyme, find the line the poet repeats in every stanza, and name three words in a row that all begin with the same sound.
This 2nd grade poetry worksheet is built in two parts that get a little harder as the page goes on. Part A gives three words from the poem and asks for the poem word that rhymes with each one, so the child has to read back through the lines rather than guess. Part B asks for the repeated line in full, which is quiet handwriting practice as well as a reading task, and then asks which three words in one line share a beginning sound. Read the poem aloud together first, clap the beat, and let the child hear the rhyme before writing anything down.

Three things make this RL.2.4 Common Core Worksheet work in a second grade classroom. First, the poem is written for this exact grade, with short lines and a steady beat, so the rhythm is something a child can hear rather than something a teacher has to describe. Second, every question has one right answer that lives in the poem, so the sheet can be checked in seconds and a child never has to guess what the question wants. Teachers and parents can keep the skill going all week. Read the poem again and clap once on every beat, then try it in a whisper and a stomp to show that the rhythm stays the same. Ask the child to invent a fourth stanza that keeps the repeated line at the end, which is the easiest way to feel why poets repeat a line at all. Hunt for alliteration on cereal boxes and street signs, collect rhyming pairs on a sticky note on the fridge, and sing along with the song below, because a song is a poem a child already knows by heart.
