The Circling Long Vowel Sounds O Worksheet helps 1st grade readers hear and spot the long o sound. Long o is the vowel sound in words like boat, bone and go, and it can be spelled several ways: oa, o with a silent e, and a single o at the end of a word. Children who can hear that sound, and tell it apart from the short o in pot or box, are ready to decode a whole new set of words on their own.
The Circling Long Vowel Sounds O Worksheet starts with the ear and ends with the eye. In Part A, students say the name of each of six pictures and circle the three that carry the long o sound. In Part B, they read four pairs of printed words aloud and circle the long o word in each pair. Every pair uses two words of the same length, so the answer can only be found by reading. Use it for classroom phonics practice, a small reading group, homework or a quick check after a vowel team lesson.
