Description
Classifying is the science skill of putting things into groups by what they have in common, and living versus nonliving is the very first sort a young scientist learns to make. This Classifying Living and Nonliving Things Worksheet asks 2nd grade students to look at eight familiar things and decide which group each one belongs in. Living things grow, need food and water, and make more of their own kind. Nonliving things never do any of those, no matter how useful or interesting they are.
The sheet is quick to hand out and quick to check. In Part A students fill in bubble A for living or bubble B for nonliving beside eight everyday words: puppy, tree, wagon, robin, bench, rock, flower, and bike. In Part B they look up from the page and find one living thing and one nonliving thing in the room around them, which is where the idea moves from a word list into the real world. Use this 2nd grade classification worksheet as a warm up before a life science unit, as a center activity, or as a fast check of what students already know. The picture at the bottom of the page shows three living things and one nonliving thing, so it doubles as a talking point during review.

This resource helps children in three ways. First, the bubble format keeps the thinking on the science instead of on handwriting, so students spend their time deciding rather than copying words into boxes. Second, the eight items are deliberately mixed, not alternating, so a student cannot fall into a pattern and has to judge each one on its own. Third, the two writing prompts ask for an original answer, which is how a teacher can tell the difference between a child who memorized a list and a child who understands the rule. Teachers and parents can keep the sorting going all week. Take a walk outside with a clipboard and tally the living and nonliving things you pass. Sort a basket of classroom objects onto two paper mats. Ask a tricky question on purpose, like whether a wooden bench was ever part of something living, and let students argue it out with reasons. Plant a bean seed in a cup and chart what it needs to stay alive. Young scientists learn this idea best by testing it against the things they can actually see and touch.
