Words that end in -rd, like bird, yard, herd and beard, are a big step for early readers because the r changes the vowel sound in front of it. This RD Phonics Stories Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives first graders a short, cheerful story packed with -rd words so they can practise the pattern while they read for meaning.
In the story, Clifford the shepherd takes care of a herd of sheep. One day a little lamb goes missing, and Clifford looks in the yard and the orchard until he hears a soft baa under an apple tree. Students read the illustrated story on the first page, then answer five multiple-choice questions on the second page by filling in the bubble for the best answer. Every question can be answered from the story, and a complete answer key is included.
