About this resource
Description
Our Defining Idioms Worksheet helps 3rd grade students figure out what common sayings really mean. An idiom is a group of words whose meaning is different from the meaning of each word on its own. When someone says “hold your horses,” there are no horses at all! Learning to tell the literal meaning from the real meaning builds vocabulary, reading comprehension and confidence with figurative language.
This 3rd grade idioms worksheet has two parts. In Part A, students read five sentences, each with an idiom in dark print, and fill in the bubble for its real meaning. Every question includes a silly literal choice, so kids must think past the words. In Part B, students read two more sentences and explain each idiom in their own words. Use the Defining Idioms Worksheet for word work, literacy centers, homework or a quick language arts check.
What’s Included
- Five multiple-choice idiom questions with fill-in bubbles
- Two short written explanations of idioms in context
- Seven kid-friendly idioms used in everyday sentences
- A complete answer key
Why This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, reading idioms inside real sentences teaches students to use context clues. Second, the literal answer choices show kids the difference between what words say and what they mean. Third, writing the meaning in their own words proves real understanding, not just a lucky guess.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Have students draw the silly literal picture of an idiom next to its real meaning. Start an idiom wall and add new sayings you hear in books and conversation. Challenge kids to use one idiom correctly at home or in class each day. You can also act out an idiom and let classmates guess its meaning, which turns practice into a fun game the whole class will enjoy.
