About this resource
Description
Every sentence a young reader meets is built around a word that tells what someone is doing, and learning to name that word is where grammar begins. The Action Words Worksheet gives first graders six clear pictures and asks them to find the one word in the word box that says what the child in each picture is doing. Because the answer is a picture rather than a sentence, students who are still building reading stamina can still show what they know about verbs.
The page opens with a word box holding six action words: climb, eat, paint, read, run and sing. Below it sit six picture cards, each showing one child in the middle of one action, with a solid writing line underneath. Students look at the picture, find the matching word in the box, and write it on the line. Print the page and use it as an independent center, a morning warm-up, or a quick check after a verb lesson. The answer key on page two shows every word written on its line, so grading takes seconds.
What’s Included
- One printable worksheet page with six picture cards
- A word box with six action words for students to choose from
- A solid writing line inside every card, sized for first-grade handwriting
- A full answer key page
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Pictures carry the meaning, so a student who cannot yet read a whole sentence can still show that they understand what a verb does.
- Writing the word instead of circling it builds spelling and letter formation at the same time as vocabulary.
- Six items is short enough to finish in one sitting, which keeps early writers confident instead of worn out.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Turn this 1st grade vocabulary worksheet into a movement break by reading each word aloud and having the class act it out before anyone picks up a pencil. Cut the finished page into cards and use them for a sorting game, or ask students to add one more action word of their own on the back and draw the picture to match. Partners can trade pages and use each word in a spoken sentence. The Action Words Worksheet also makes a simple before-and-after check: give it at the start of a verb unit, then again at the end.
