The Hanukkah Scramble Worksheet turns six familiar Hanukkah words into letter puzzles that second graders sound out, sort and spell. Unscrambling a word is spelling in reverse: children have all of the letters and have to decide what order the sounds belong in, which is exactly the thinking a weekly spelling list asks for. Because a reference box holds every answer, this Hanukkah Scramble Worksheet keeps the task about letters and sounds rather than about guessing a word a child has never met.
Six scrambled words sit down the left of the page, each with a long writing line beside it: candle, dreidel, eight, gift, latkes and menorah. The word box at the top lists all six in alphabetical order, and the answers deliberately do not follow that order, so children have to read and test rather than pair the first puzzle with the first word. Read the word box aloud together first, work the six puzzles, then check the answer key on the second page.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Before writing anything, have children read the word box out loud and clap the syllables in each word; menorah and dreidel are the two that need it most. Then work the puzzles in any order, starting with the shortest. Ask children to say what each word means once they solve it, and keep a running list of the holiday words they can now spell.
